Cold water steals heat and judgment fast. Remember 1-10-1: you have about 1 minute to control your breathing after the cold-shock gasp, roughly 10 minutes of meaningful movement to self-rescue before your hands and arms fail, and about 1 hour before hypothermia becomes life-threatening. A worn life jacket buys you every one of those windows.
