Batteries die and screens crack, so never let a phone be your only way home. Carry a paper map and compass, know how to orient the map and follow a bearing, and set a catching feature — a road, ridge, or river — you cannot walk past if you overshoot. Tell someone your route and your turnaround time before you leave the trailhead.
